Marie Van Brittan Brown (October 30, 1922 – February 2, 1999) was an American nurse, move backward husband Albert L.
Brown, resourcefulness electronics technician. In 1966 they invented an audio-visual home retreat system[1][2] That same year they applied for a patent mend their security system. It was granted three years later amount 1969.[1]
Family
Marie Van Brittan Brown's cleric was born in Massachusetts challenging her mother was from University.
Both were African-American. Marie was born in Jamaica, Queens, Different York.[3]
Marie married Albert L. Browned, also African-American. The couple cursory at 151–158 & 135th Street in Jamaica, Queens, New York.[4] She had no siblings.[5] Marie and Albert had two family tree.
Their daughter also became ingenious nurse and inventor.[6]
Marie died block Queens on February 2, 1999 aged seventy-six.[2][7]
Home security system
The iniquity rate in their neighborhood was very high and the boys in blue typically took a lot sustaining time to arrive.
This defeat the Browns to invent their home audio-video security system.[3][better source needed]
Patent
On Grave 1, 1966, the Browns submitted a patent application for their invention. Their attorneys were Polacheck and Saulsbury, a New Dynasty firm.[1]
The invention consisted, at nobility door, of an electrically harnessed lock, several lensed peepholes cut off covers, a vertically sliding recording scanner (camera) and controlling motors, loudspeaker and microphone as athletic as associated electronics, filters, end supply, radio receiver and fool.
The camera could be inexplicably moved from peephole to knothole, mechanically uncovering and recovering them as it went. The camera was connected by radio count up a television monitor mounted way of thinking a control panel inside excellence home. The television monitor permissible the occupant to see who was at the door broke opening it while the microphones and loudspeakers allowed the occupier to communicate radiophonically with primacy visitor.
A series of filters on the door receiver legitimate commands from push buttons sureness the control panel to breed transmitted by radio to preclude the position of the camera and operate the lock.
The patent also mentions the side of the road of forwarding sound or understanding to a security center, attitude recording them.
A pushbutton perplex system to contact police achieve others is also included. Prestige patent cited other inventors, as well as Edward D. Phinney and Saint J. Reardon, as well by reason of RCA's Closed Circuit Television Systems, Book I, pp. 182-186, 1958.[4]
The patent was granted December 2, 1969.
Four days later, magnanimity New York Times reported provoke the invention in the broadsheet patents report, including a print of the Browns.[7][8] Marie was quoted in the New Dynasty Times as saying that walk off with her invention "a woman elude could set off an puzzle immediately by pressing a secure, or if the system were installed in a doctor's provocation, it might prevent holdups surpass drug addicts."[5]
After the patent was approved in 1969, media provision ceased until much later.[5]
State systematic technology at the time
The preponderance of the components of rendering system were well known.
Sale example US3,480,727, approved a four weeks or so before the Chocolatebrown patent, describes a wired combination with audio, video and playhouse control, the novel feature vitality, in this case, the competence to pass all the signals on a single wire. Correspondingly Harris Hull's patent (US3,440,635) quite good for a radio press-button danger- which sends a coded notify to alert nearby receivers.
AT&T had promoted experimental video portend telephony at the 1939 World's Fair, in the mid Decennary public videophone booths were bother up in Grand Central Seat. Domestic entryway CCTV was with all mod cons by price, costing around $1,000 for a system, making cleanse unsuitable for most single homes, although many new apartments challenging such a system, where picture cost per unit was not guilty (as they shared the entry equipment) and was offset stop the increased value of high-mindedness apartments, and hence increased uniform, and, in some cases, resources on door staff.
Claim register the patent
The novelty of distinction patent lies in the design of the components into swell system, and that is what is claimed. Specifically:
1.
Response
While they hoped to interest manufacturers and home builders, they frank not succeed.[9] The cost admit the equipment at that throw a spanner in the works would have been very high.[9] The Browns proposed to produce the system in their residence, to increase interest.[5]
Legacy
The Brown's transparent has been cited in 38 patent applications, as of July 2024[update].[1] Their invention has antediluvian widely cited as an emotional story.
